How the Hell to do Hells gate?
What the Hell to wear?

News Date: 13th May 2013

Over the years we have seen a variety of different techniques used, some have been successful and others, well let's just say they have kept the crowd amused.

Here's some hints on how to approach hells gate:
  • Standard. Hang upside down with straight arms and your ankles hooked up over the rope. As you move your hands along the rope either drag your ankles along peeling off layers of skin as you go or move each leg alternatively in front of each other. If you drop your feet off then do your best to swing your feet back up and keep going, alternatively transfer to the Ape Hanger technique listed below.
  • Ape hanger. Usually one for the guys who want to show off their biceps. This is done purely by hanging off the rope with your hands and moving ‘hand over hand' across. Can be done forward or in reverse. Best done in attire where yours biceps can be seen.
  • On Top. Although the army recommend this as the most effective method, and quite often used by the ladies, we would only recommend this for guys who already have children. Climb up and lie down on top of the rope letting one leg dangle below and hook your other ankle on top of the rope. The rope will need to run down the centre of your chest through to your groin. Positioning here is crucial! Pull yourself across the rope keeping your balance. Ensure you don't lie on your back as this is very ineffective.
  • Sit on top. A new method introduced at Tough Bloke Victoria earlier in the year. Sit on top and shuffle across sideways. Not the fastest way across but it proved effective. Just make sure your pants are hard wearing.
  • Tight Rope Walk. Pretty self-explanatory. Walk across tight rope style. There has not been a successful crossing using this method.

Whatever technique you choose Tim our MC will ensure the crowd is entertained by "encouraging" you across.

We quite often get asked, What should I wear? Well here are some tips on the best options:
  • Standard shorts and T-Shirt. Very common and quite suitable. Just be aware that baggy clothes get very heavy when covered with mud. Why not custom make a team shirt for the event?
  • Lycra! Whether its compression gear or a pair of tights you have been saving since the 80's Lycra is probably the most common attire we see. Good as they don't hold the mud so don't get heavy after you've been through the mud pits.
  • Fancy dress. Why not have some fun out there and be as creative as possible. We have seen brides and grooms, superman, the Smurfs, men wearing Tutus' and unfortunately the occasional Man-kini. Every year we give away some great prizes for the best fancy dress outfit so start thinking now!!
  • Shoes. Whatever shoes you choose to wear they will get filthy! Just make sure you have enclosed footwear and either dispose of your old shoes sensibly or throw those new runners in the washing machine when you're done.

Event Wrap Up, Results & Photos - TBC VIC

News Date: 19th April 2013

The mud was thick, the obstacles challenging and the lycra was bright but in amongst it all we still saw smiles as people crossed the finish line on a perfect Melbourne weekend.

With a great mix of serious competitors and people just out to have fun, the event was swamped with Tough Chick's and Blokes and it didn't take long for the mud to be strewn across the course. The nut cracker did just that, the mud pit a participant favourite and Hells Gate left its signature rope burn on quite a few legs. One poor soul even lost his shorts in the swim across the dam, although we got the impression he wasn't too worried about that!

We were excited to have the Obstacle Course Racing League join us this year and put in a double lap special on Saturday arvo with a showdown between winner William Lind and Matt Murphy. However Matt backed up with fastest time overall and took out 1st place in the Elite Category.

Congratulations to all competitors who took place and we look forward to seeing you back for another crack at it next year.

Results and photos are now available from the Results page.

Supporting The McGrath Foundation

News Date: 23rd August 2012

The McGrath Foundation is excited to be friends with the Tough Bloke Challenge in 2012.

The McGrath Foundation was co-founded by Jane McGrath and her cricketing husband Glenn after Jane’s initial recovery from breast cancer. It was Jane’s personal experience that led her to believe that the McGrath Foundation should raise money to place McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities right across Australia, as well as to increase breast awareness in young Australian women.

As of August 2012, the McGrath Foundation has helped support over 16,000 Australian families experiencing breast cancer, with 77 McGrath Breast Care Nurses working in communities right across Australia. They are halfway to their goal of 150 McGrath Breast Care Nurses to help ensure that every Australian family experiencing breast cancer has access to a breast care nurse, so we need your help!

As a part of Tough Bloke Challenge 2013, there will be many ways you can help raise money for the McGrath Foundation, so stay tuned for more updates!
